PSG's Post-Galactico Era Begins with a Last-Gasp Win Thanks to Girona Goalkeeper's Blunder
New Era, Same Result
PSG's much-anticipated post-Galactico era got off to a winning start on Saturday, but it was far from convincing. The Parisians needed a last-gasp own goal from Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to secure a 1-0 victory at the Parc des Princes.
Wasteful PSG
PSG dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout the game, but they were guilty of some wasteful finishing. Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi all had opportunities to put the home side ahead, but they failed to find the target.
Gazzaniga's Howler
With just seconds remaining on the clock, PSG finally broke the deadlock in bizarre circumstances. A cross from the right-hand side found its way to Gazzaniga, who inexplicably fumbled the ball into his own net. The Argentine goalkeeper was left red-faced, and PSG were able to celebrate a fortuitous victory.
Galtier's Relief
PSG manager Christophe Galtier was relieved to get the three points, but he admitted that his team needs to improve. "We created a lot of chances, but we didn't take them," he said. "We need to be more clinical in front of goal. But I'm happy with the win, and I'm sure we will improve as the season progresses."
Girona's Disappointment
Girona were disappointed to lose in such cruel fashion. They had defended resolutely for most of the game and looked set to earn a point. But Gazzaniga's error cost them dearly.
What's Next?
PSG will now turn their attention to their UEFA Champions League opener against Juventus on Tuesday. Girona will host Celta Vigo in La Liga on Sunday.
