Korean Local Elections: A Brief Overview

Electoral System

The Korean local elections use a first-past-the-post system, in which the candidate with the most votes wins the seat. There are two main types of local elections in Korea: mayoral elections and provincial gubernatorial elections. Mayoral elections are held every four years to elect the mayors of cities and counties. Provincial gubernatorial elections are also held every four years to elect the governors of provinces.
